TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok is estimated to be freed from jail on January 24, 2019. Ahok will be released from Mako Brimob Detention Center faster than his two-year sentence issued by the panel of judges over religious blasphemy.
Director General for Correctional Affairs Sri Puguh Budi Utami said that the estimation is made after calculating Christmas remission this year. Earlier, Ahok received a general pardon.
“Ahok gains a total remission of three months and fifteen days,” said Sri Puguh during her visit to Tempo office with Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly on Monday, December 10.
The panel of judges named Ahok guilty for defaming a religion during his speech in Thousand Islands in 2016, and charged him with two years imprisonment starting May 9, 2017.
A lawyer of Ahok I Wayan Sudirta previously said that his client would be freed in early 2019. According to Wayan, Ahok’s condition is getting better.
A sister of Ahok, Nana Riwayatie, also explained the latter’s condition ahead of the release. According to her, Ahok now has a muscular body because he frequently exercises. Nana’s statement clarified a circulated photo in which Ahok is thinner than he was during his term as the governor of the capital city.
