TEMPO.CO, Rejang Lebong - A small corpse flower (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) blooms in Rimbo Recap Village, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu, since the past two days.
The tiny corpse flower or commonly called as suweg by the Javanese people grows on the edge of the rice field, right next to the bamboo fence in front of a house of Dedek, a resident, in the alley of the Cemetery of Ciraos Hamlet, Rimbo Recap Village, Curup Selatan District.
“It has bloomed since two days ago, when it bloomed, there was a smell of corpse and after we checked it, it turned out that the smell came from the flower,” said Ema, 40 years old, a resident whose house is next to Dedek’s house, when met on Saturday, December 8.
The tiny corpse flower was then photographed by Ema’s children and the neighbors, then they uploaded it to social media. After that, many people came to the location. Ema said since she lived there for two years, only this time she saw a small corpse flower.
Sukasmir, the 60-year-old resident of Ciraos Hamlet, said that such small corpse flowers have often bloomed in the village since 10 years ago.
“In the Rimbo Recap village, besides small corpse flowers, large and tall corpse flowers also often grow,” he said.
The Forest Ecosystem Protection (PEH) Officer of the Bengkulu-Lampung Region I Conservation Section BKSDA Office, Ayu Pratidina said that the tiny corpse flower is included in the taro family, and will usually bloom within 1 to 2 years.
The corpse flower can bloom in the Rejang Lebong Regency. It is often cut down by the residents because it is considered pest in the garden and is considered an ordinary flower.
