TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The recent discovery of a sperm whale`s carcass was considered as a tragic loss by environmentalists since the marine animal was found to have digested nearly six kilograms of marine waste, mainly plastic wastes.

This occurrence, according to WWF International global campaign director Zach Abraham, has become nature’s warning on the threatened livelihood of marine life.

“The government and businesses must act more to prevent plastic pollution entering rivers and the ocean,” said Zach through an email on Sunday, November 25.

Plastic waste, he said, is the world's crisis that needs a global solution from governments and corporations that contribute to the issue and are responsible to fix the issue. However, Zach suggested it needs real immediate action to overcome plastic waste problems.

“We need an upstream solution, not just a downstream solution. Beach cleanups are not enough to overcome the problem,” said Zach.

He maintains that the solution is to invest in global governance where businesses in the industry must be responsible for managing their product’s cycle and assist the government in handling the issue through a collaboration effort.
