TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Sulawesi Integrated Care Center for the Empowerment of Women and Children (P2TP2A) said that the issue of human trafficking, especially among females, must be closely monitored following the devastating earthquake that struck Palu in late September.
“Based on experiences in other regions that were struck by a natural disaster, many cases of abuse against women comprising of rape, sexual harassment, and human trafficking happened,” said Central Sulawesi’s P2TP2A head of women and children victim assistance Nudiatulhuda Mangun at Palu yesterday, Nov. 26.
Nudiatulhuda said that female residents become the most affected since women are more prone to be burdened by life’s responsibilities following a disaster.
“This is what we must prevent together, don’t let it happen at our region following a devastating natural disaster,” said Nudiatulhuda.
The women’s rights activist suggested the government be active and intensify its attempts to provide security and fulfill the rights of women to avoid violations happening in the region.
