TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of five gunungan (mountain-shaped foods stack) containing various crops will be paraded by courtiers from the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace in the Grebeg Maulud event on Tuesday, November 20. The activity marks the peak of the Sekaten night market event and coincides with the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Head of Public Relations of the Yogyakarta Communication and Informatics Office Iswantoro in Yogyakarta said on Monday that five gunungan consisting of Gunungan Lanang, Gunungan Wadon, Gunungan Pawuhan, Gunungan Dharat, and Gunungan Gepak would be paraded by the courtiers starting at 10:00 a.m.

“Each will be paraded to three locations, to the Gedhe Kauman Mosque, the Kepatihan Office yard, and Puro Pakualaman,” said Iswantoro.

According to him, the Grebeg Maulud event is held as a form of gratitude of the Yogyakarta Palace and as a symbol of the benefit between the king and his people or the people of Yogyakarta with their leaders.

Iswantoro believed that the cultural rituals held every year would be able to increase tourist attraction in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY).

“Of course this event will be an icon in DIY because the ones who came to the event were not only from Yogyakarta but from outside Yogyakarta, even from abroad,” he said.
