University of Indonesia Team Clinches Gold in 2018 iGEM

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian team comprising of
University of Indonesia (UI) students successfully clinched gold medal at the International Genetically Engineering Machine (iGEM) Competition 2018 held in Boston, United States.
The UI team presented their innovation entitled “Finding Dipthy” in the form of diphtheria diagnostic tool using recombinant bacteria that is hoped to be a quick, easy, and affordable option to better handle diphtheria diagnosis in Indonesia.
The team comprises of 14 students from various majors, such as Andrea Laurentius (medical science faculty class 2016), Galuh Widyastuti (public health faculty class 2016), Glory Lamria (engineering faculty class 2015), and Valdi Japranata (medical science faculty class 2015).
The team’s project was presented to a panel of judges composing of world experts in the field of genetic engineering such as Senior Staff MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Bioengineering Group, Director of the Competition - iGEM Foundation.
University of Indonesia Spokesperson Rifelly Dewi Astuti said that the competition is the world’s largest genetic engineering and molecular biology competition that is annually participated by 321 teams from more than 100 countries across the globe.
