JK Asks Houses for Palu Quake Victims to be Built in January 2019

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) said the government would start building permanent houses for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi, and surrounding areas starting in January 2019.
“Starting in January, we have to build it. I ask for the construction to start in January, in the next fiscal year,” JK said at the Vice President office, Jakarta, Tuesday, November 13.
Kalla said the government was evaluating regarding areas that were included in the red zone or were prone to disasters. The red zone area must not have a building. So, the victims who originally lived in the area will be relocated.
The VP said that the budget could be determined after the evaluation was conducted. “We have not been able to determine [the budget] before we know very well how many houses that are in the red area, which cannot be inhabited. How many damaged houses that can be repaired, that are severely damaged. The data is still somewhat different,” he said.
According to JK, the budget for the construction of permanent houses will be included in the 2019 State Budget (APBN). The government has prepared funds of Rp5 trillion.
If there is a budget shortfall, Kalla said the government would take the available ready-to-use funds, such as loans from the World Bank.
