Indonesian weightlifting athlete Eko Yuli Irawan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo welcomed gold medalist weightlifter Eko Yuli Iriawan at the Merdeka Palace today who was accompanied by Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi.

Eko Yuli’s visit to the presidential palace was after he grabbed three gold medals in the world’s weightlifting championship held in Asghabat, Turkmenistan.

“I believe that the government and the Indonesian people are really proud of the achievement shown by Eko Yuli at the world’s weightlifting championship yesterday,” said the president at Merdeka Palace today.

Furthermore, Jokowi announced that the government would provide its utmost support for any sporting events participated by Indonesian athletes and also hopes that athletes would follow Eko’s achievement.

Regarding the upcoming Olympics in Japan, Eko Yuli Irawan said he will attempt to maintain his positive performance and is eyeing on winning the gold medal. Eko won the gold medal at the 61-kilogram weight class and at the same time broke the record in its class.
