TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla called for some of Indonesia’s young generation to seek a path in entrepreneurship rather than building upon the hopes of becoming a civil servant (PNS).

Jusuf Kalla acknowledged a large number of applicants whenever a PNS enrollment test is announced, despite only 3 to 4 percent will eventually be accepted. He maintained that the young need to have other dreams to reach.

“It is not that people are not allowed to become a PNS, it’s just that the chances are too small so you have to prepare other options that are potentially better for you,” said Jusuf Kalla in a public lecture at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran in Yogyakarta, on Sunday.

The vice president, who himself comes from a business background, urged students attending the session to reconsider the role of being an entrepreneur, who he says positively affects the country’s economy and is somewhat patriotic.

“In the past, entrepreneurs are born from families with parents that are businessmen. But the situation today sees anyone can become an entrepreneur as it is supported by the available technology,” said Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
