TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti opined a system was required to monitor the commitment of participants of 2018 Our Ocean Conference (OOC).
“I’d like to highlight that there will be a system to track the commitments that have been made,” said Susi in 2018 Our Ocean Opening Reception in Nusa Dua, Bali, Sunday, Oct. 28.
Susi explained the commitment in question is the messages conveyed by the country participants during the OOC. The system was required to know whether those commitments were run or not.
During her speech, Susi mentioned that Indonesia had dealt with illegal, unreported, unregulated fishing, and that contributed to the ocean sustainability and boosted the economy.
A total of 50 ocean talks would be held in the fifth OOC in Bali which aimed at preserving the sea. Six presidents, one vice president, and 36 ministers would attend in the sea conference on Oct 29-30. Six marine issues would be discussed, such as the country’s commitment, efforts to reduce plastic waste, sea pollution, maritime security, weather changes, and sustainable fisheries.
Earlier on Sunday, Oct 28, Minister Susi and Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi led the action to clean the beach as part of events during Our Ocean Conference (OOC). “We have to preserve the sea from Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. Now, we deal with waste as pollution in waters. I support the stop of plastic use,” said Susi Pudjiastuti before the event.
Meanwhile, Minister Retno Marsudi said the action to clean the beach is a small contribution yet an inspiration for the public. “The Ocean is not a trash bin. Our Ocean is Our life, so love the sea as you love your life,” she said.
