TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Soegijapranata Semarang University’s transportation expert Djoko Setijowarno says that the Esemka represents the enthusiasm of Indonesians upon the presence of an entirely domestic car product.
He said that it would be a remarkable achievement if the Esemka can be developed even further and replace foreign-made automotive products. “It would be an achievement for Indonesia’s automotive industry if that can be done,” said Djoko yesterday.
Djoko Setijowarno explained that to achieve such a feat demands the government’s consistency in providing the opportunity for domestic products, similar to what South Korea has implemented.
“Are we brave enough to reduce the existing products? You rarely see foreign products, they are mostly domestically made,” said Djoko.
Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi is currently reviewing the Esemka car project which he fully supports. “I will review the Esemka once more since it’s the creation of Indonesians. However, there are requirements that need to be fulfilled,” said the Minister.
