TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Social Affairs Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the government would complete the development of the new Palu City or The New Palu within two years.

Agus said the new Palu City would be located in a relocation area that is being studied by the local administration together with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

“What will happen in the next two years is what we call as New Palu,” Agus said at the Ministry of State Secretariat office, Jakarta, Tuesday, October 23.

Agus said that BMKG had mapped the disaster-prone areas in Central Sulawesi.

“BMKG has already conducted micro-mapping, the task of the regional administration is to look for the lands that are considered to be relatively safer from disasters. I heard that it is ready, around 20 kilometers from Palu City,” he said.

Agus said the government would not take the risk of rebuilding in an area that was declared to be half-safe or half-vulnerable.

“In Central Sulawesi, our priority is to move completely, relocate housing, and facilities to areas that are relatively safe,” Agus said.

The city of Palu, Donggala, and its surroundings were rocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 on September 28, followed by a tsunami that devastated a number of areas.
