TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan recalled the reason behind the renaming of Jakarta’s public facilities, which he revealed was inspired by Tempo Magazine’s editorial decision to popularize the Indonesian term ‘santai’ or relaxed.

“I was once told the story on the use of the word ‘santai’ which replaced ‘rileks’ [Western loanword in Indonesia],” Anies recalled in an exclusive interview with a team from Tempo on Monday, October 15.

Anies Baswedan said he was told a story of how Tempo`s editorial team meeting discussed about the use of ‘rileks’ which was a loanword from ‘relax’. That was when a participant from South Sumatra suggested ‘santai’ to replace the loanword.

“No one knew what ‘santai’ was at the time. Tempo used the word and baffled everyone,” said Anies who also acknowledged that the word has become a common use among the Indonesian society. The governor said that the story from Tempo’s ‘editorial inner-kitchen’ inspired him to localize the name of every public facility across Jakarta.

One of the examples, said Anies Baswedan, is the Jakarta Lingko (Jak Lingko) that represents an integrated mass transportation system adhering to the word ‘Lingko’ that means interconnected that came from an irrigation pattern originating from Manggarai District, East Nusa Tenggara.
