A parenting expert Jarot Wijanarko in his book entitled 'Memaksimalkan Otak Anak Anda' outlined several brain foods to stimulate children’s intelligence, as summarized by Tempo:
1. Salmon
Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, EPA, and DHA which essential for the growth and development of children’s brain. The study showed children with adequate omega-3 fatty acid have sharper thinking skill. Salmon is made up of more omega-3 than tuna.
2. Eggs
Eggs are the great source of protein that sold at affordable price. The yellow or the yolk contains choline, a nutrient good to help develop the memory.
3. Peanut butter
Peanut is the source of Vitamin E which functioning as the antioxidant that protects the brain membranes.
4. Grains
The brain continually requires glucose from the body. Grains, especially wheat, is one of the alternatives to fulfill the glucose needs. Vitamin B in wheat can secure the nervous system.
5. Fruits
Fruits with solid colors such as cherries, blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries have great nutrition for kids brain. Berries have high antioxidants and vitamin C to ward of free radicals. Several studies reveal strawberry and blueberry extract can prevent cognitive decline.
6. Beans
Beans are the special snack as it contains protein and complex carbohydrates as well as fibers, vitamin, and minerals which can boost children’s energy and thinking skill. According to a study, red beans have more omega-3 fatty acid than other beans.
7. Vegetables with bright color
Tomato, pumpkin, carrot, spinach are high nutrient foods and contain antioxidant to enhance brain function. Parents can process vegetables into interesting foods as to deal with picky eaters.
