TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo revealed the driving factor behind his talked-about speech in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – World Bank annual meetings which quoted the hit-series Game of Thrones.

President Jokowi said that he addressed the speech for world leaders, the general society, and Indonesian politicians. His speech likened the global economic and political situation is saturated by the competition between major countries and elites. However, what those countries do not understand is that a larger threat is posed by climate change, terrorism, and economic setback.

“Actually, the moral of the speech I delivered at the time was that confrontation and disputes will only lead to suffering,” said Jokowi in his speech at the Indonesian Christian University (UKI) senate meeting today.

He further reminded fellow Indonesians and domestic political elites to put forth the spirit of unity even though each and every political contestation would bring a sense of rivalry, he reminded that the rivalry should not be the one that will only establish enemies and hatred among each other.

“A contestation should not sacrifice our nation’s foundation. Our social and political foundation is stability and security, tolerance and unity,” said Jokowi who prefers to undergo a matured election that puts forth ideas, forward-thinking programs, with a fresh narrative.
