Exposing Children to Asian Para Games can Inspire Them: Expert

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Q Consulting Psychologist Rena Masri advised parents to take their children with them to watch the 2018 Asian Para Games, an event that she said could introduce children to a variety of people with special needs.

“Children would be exposed to people with physical disabilities who are still adamant and able to be the best,” said Rena Masri to Tempo on Monday, October 8.

For children that are still at a very young age, parents might have to provide an explanation with simple words that can describe a certain disability condition. Rena Masri said that by making children aware of the existence of people with disabilities, children can develop empathy and gratitude towards their own life.

Rena reminded that the Para athletes need to be respected since they are able to rise in life despite having physical disabilities. This is one of the elements Rena argued could inspire people to do their best in life and have an objective view and compassion towards people with disabilities rather than just feeling sorry.
