West Java`s Mount Salak not Erupting, PVMBG Reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) assured that Mount Salak in Bogor, West Java, has not erupted even though a warning was issued by the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) on Wednesday, October 10.

“Up until this moment there are no eruptions from Mount Salak and is still considered to be at Level I (Normal),” said Kasbani, head of PVMBG in a written statement Tempo received on Wednesday.

The visual observation of Mount Salak throughout October 2018 did not detect signs of the mountain’s crater producing any smoke. The PVMBG also did not detect any increased seismic activity from the mountain.

The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) has retracted its public warning after obtaining confirmation that the mountain is in fact not erupting.

The observation by officials up until Wednesday, October 10, saw no signs of volcanic ash rain. “No thumping sounds came from Mount Salak’s peak or areas located at its slope such as the Cidahu National Park,” said Kasbani.
