TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) together with police`s cybercrime unit found elements associating the masochistic behavior of teens slashing their body part and social media posts that support this highly-harmful behavior.
“This is believed to be the cause of their behavior,” said KPAI Commissioner in the field of health and NAPZA, Sitty Hikmawatty on Saturday, October 6.
The presumption is backed by a recent report of 41 students in Central Lampung who harmed themselves earlier in October. Previously, a similar incident involving 56 students took place in Pekanbaru, Riau.
This was deemed strong enough evidence for authorities and KPAI to further study and secure the videos that sparked the mass-incident. Sitty said that this can be an iceberg phenomenon if it is not prevented as early as possible, “We view this as a casuistic incident regarding teens’ puberty,” she said.
She deemed puberty as a normal phase teens go through, however, it becomes dangerous once this susceptible phase is stimulated by factors, either internally or externally, spark excessive emotions.
“Based on our investigation in Pekanbaru, the video in social media is at least deemed as the negative stimulus that drove students to conduct self-harm,” said KPAI Commissioner Sitty.
