BNPB: Intensity of C. Sulawesi Aftershocks Drops

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho announced that Central Sulawesi`s aftershock intensity has gradually fallen in the past days. 

“The aftershocks happened because the earth’s fault system and between-plates are moving toward equilibrium,” said Sutopo at the BNPB headquarters on Friday, October 5. 

Up to 06:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) today, the BNPB recorded at least 437 aftershocks following the major earthquake on September 28. Sutopo predicts that 1,000 aftershocks with a lower intensity will continue to take place.

Meanwhile, Sutopo announced on Friday, the number of Central Sulawesi’s earthquake casualties climbed to 1,571 with 1,558 of them already buried. 

“The data could change and continue since evacuations are still running,” said Sutopo.

Central Sulawesi was struck by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake which caused major damages at areas such as Palu, Donggala, and Parigi Moutong on Friday, September 28. The harmful earthquake was followed by a tsunami that further damaged the area.
