TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate of Cyber Crime of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Division arrested nine suspects for spreading hoax news following the earthquake and tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi.
“There are nine suspects who spread hoaxes related to the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Palu,” said the chief of sub-directorate I of the National Police's Cyber Crime Directorate, Sr. Comr. Dani Kustoni in his office on Friday, October 5.

Dani said the suspects were arrested in a number of areas, including West Nusa Tenggara, Manado and Pekanbaru. The motive, the police said, was just for fun.

According to Dani, the police were looking into 19 social media accounts that were allegedly spreading the hoax news. He said the suspects were charged under Article 14 (2) Law No. 1 Year 1946, which carries a sentence of three years behind bars.
