5 ATMs Almost Looted After Tsunami in Palu

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Public Relations Division of the National Police Headquarters, Inspector General Setyo Wasisto, said the police had foiled five cases of automatic teller machines (ATMs) looting in Palu City, Central Sulawesi, after the earthquake and tsunami.

“From the attempt to forcibly withdraw money from ATMs in Palu City, all of them can be foiled by the police,” said Inspector General Setyo in Jakarta, Monday, October 1.

The attempts took place in four different places. There were two ATM machines on Jalan Touwa, an ATM machine on Jalan S. Parman, an ATM machine on Al Khaerat Islamic University, and an ATM machine at Gas Station on Jalan Diponegoro.

Setyo said the police could only arrest the perpetrators on Jalan S. Parman. They consist of four people who have been detained in the Central Sulawesi Regional Police. Meanwhile, the perpetrators on other places ran away.

The ATM targets are Bank Mandiri, BCA, BRI and Danamon. “To prevent the similar incident, a number of police personnel were deployed,” Setyo said.

The police only tolerate the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu to take basic necessities and food. “More than that, they will be arrested,” Setyo said.
