Thamrin City Celebrates National Batik Day for Four Days

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - To commemorate National Batik Day, a shopping center Thamrin City, Tanah Abang holds batik exhibition for four days beginning on September 29 to October 2, 2018, and as an attempt to preserve the nation’s noble heritage that is also the world’s heritage.

Thamrin City General Manager Adi Adnyana said several attractive events would be presented during the exhibition. “Such as Trade in Batik in which visitors can trade their old batik to a new one for free,” Adi said in a press release in Jakarta, Sunday, October 1.

In addition to Trade in Batik, the exhibition will feature batik auction, bazaar, fashion show, ethnic music show, rampak kendang (a traditional West Java percussion ensemble), and batik sale for Rp5,000 per piece as the donation for victims of Lombok disaster through Bazis (Jakarta charitable agency).

“And it [the event] will be closed by performances from The Ikan Bakars, D’Masiv, Geisha,” he added.

The presence of batik center in Thamrin City has boosted the sales of batik and benefitted the traders, including Cindy Sosrodiningrat, the owner of Boutique Eyang Putri.

“I have run batik business for eight years, the sales trend of batik is increasing over the years in line with government support through its regulation and excessive promotion,” Cindy said.
