TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Sumatran tiger was found lifeless entangled in ropes that coiled its lower body at the border of Muara Lembu Village and Pangkal Indarung in Riau.
“The tiger’s carcass was found hanging at the edge of a cliff tied to a rope that coiled its waist,” said Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Chief Suharyono on Wednesday, September 26.
According to Suharyono, the members of the BKSDA region I received a report from local residents regarding a mature female tiger that had been entangled in lines of rope in the border region on September 25. The team spent two hours reaching the location of the incident on motorcycles.
However, once the team arrived they did not see the said tiger and only discovered two sets of an alleged tiger trap made out of nylon rope without any presence of human activity in its vicinity.
The team departed the following day to the same location to search for the tiger’s whereabouts but was met with a sight of the tiger dead hanging at the edge of a cliff full of bushes.
“The rope tied around its waist caused the tiger to die hanging at the edge of the cliff,” said Suharyono who regrets the incident considering that the female tiger could have potentially produced offspring for the area’s tiger conservancy.
