TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Ministry planned to develop Komodo Airport, Laboan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara Province as international airport.

The ministry’s Airport Director Polana B. Pramesti said the airport presently able to accommodate one million passengers per year and expected it would later cater 4 million passengers by 2044.

“In the future, we will open international routes to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Darwin, and Perth,” said Polana after the event of Market Sounding of the government-to-business cooperation (KPBU) of Komodo Airport, Tuesday, September 25.

Polana explained the airport development was required to support the target of tourist arrival in Indonesia considering the ministry prioritized Labuan Bajo as one of ten flagship destinations known as New Bali.

The development would include the expansion of airport runway to 9,000 square meters, strengthening the 9,878.5 square-meter taxiway of PCN 50 to PCN 60, and apron expansion to 11,100 square meters.

The airport runway would also be extended to 2,450 meters from previously at 2,250 meters in length in a bid to load medium-haul aircraft Boeing 737-800. The ministry would also expand the domestic and international terminal, parking areas, and develop the supporting facilities in the airport.

Polana expected all facility developments could be completed next year so by 2020 the airport capacity increased.

Earlier, Transportation Ministry planned to hold an auction of Komodo Airport management with the scheme of KPBU or cooperation between the government and business entities in October 2018 following the market sounding event. Komodo Airport was one out of 5 pilot project of the ministry in Eastern Indonesia using KPBU scheme as to lessen the available budget.
