TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Bengkulu has been struck by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the hypocenter of the quake was at 40 kilometers below sea level.
The earthquake’s epicenter was just 27 kilometers southwest of Manna City, South Bengkulu.
BMKG said that up until 14:50 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), there has yet been any sign of aftershocks and reports of damages caused by the quake.
The agency further elaborates that based on its epicenter and hypocenter, the latest earthquake can be considered as a shallow quake caused by the subduction of the Indo-Australia plate into the Eurasian plate at the Megathrust zone located in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra island.
BMKG reported that the earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat and reminds local resident to avoid false rumors regarding the earthquake.
