TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Vice President Boediono made suggestions for Indonesia to learn from Singapore regarding the quality advancement of the country`s education system. The UK-based media The Economist earlier considered Singapore has the best education system in the world.

“That’s a remarkable achievement, and so we must learn a lot from the Little Red Dot, our neighboring country,” said Boediono in Balai Kartini, Jakarta, Wednesday, September 12.

Boediono pointed out that Indonesia since its independent day had applied various programs to carry out the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, which is enriching the lives of the nation. Other than the government, the society also contributed to the education.

“Results obtained,” Boediono said, “but, it is probably the time for us to set a higher target for the sake of human development in this country.”

The former vice president for President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Indonesia should revive its determination to fully enhance the human development based on conceptual, integrated, and systematic policies and program.

“And its implementation must be consistent, coherent, and sustainable,” said the former governor of Bank Indonesia. The human development, according to him, is one of the means to develop a nation. He analogized it with the river cleaning project.

According to Boediono, there are steps to clean the river, starting from cleaning the upstream and the water spring, then maintaining the water flow until the downstream as to prevent pollution. “If this method is applied, in the future, clean water will wipe out the dirty water and thus the river will be free of pollution,” he explained.

Similar to that, Boediono said, the journey of a nation could be perceived from the flow of new generation that supersedes the old generation. Hence, the country’s development requires a sustainable process. “How each generation prepares for better next generation,” he underlined.
