Jokowi Hopes Bilateral Trade with Vietnam will Grow by 2020

TEMPO.CO, Hanoi - President Joko `Jokowi` Widodo stated that Indonesia would continue to study its trade potential after the trade with Vietnam lately showed a positive trend. The president said that the bilateral trade of Indonesia-Vietnam showed improvement after it generated US$6.8 billion for the past three years.

“We expect our trade to reach US$10 billion in 2020,” said President Jokowi in a written statement issued by the head of the palace's press bureau, Bey Machmudin yesterday, Sept. 11.

Other than the trade segment, both countries agreed upon an improved cooperation in several other fields that include investments, the eradication of illegal fisheries, finalizing the exclusive economic zone, and regional peace.

The meeting between President Jokowi and President Tran Dai Quang also discussed the possibility to eliminate elements that hamper Indonesia’s automotive products. Jokowi also talked about the wishes of Indonesian investors on developing investments in Vietnam. 

“That is why I asked President Tran Di Quang to protect Indonesian investors and provide a fair and an acceptable treatment for the investors,” said the Indonesian president. 

Jokowi hopes that Indonesia and Vietnam would be able to improve bilateral cooperation in a number of fields. The meeting also ratified the joint communique IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated) Fishing.
