TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah depreciation against the US dollar prompts Vice President Jusuf Kalla to ask people to help the government reduce imports. The VP said this could be an effective way to support the government's efforts to curb the current account deficit (CAD) in a bid to stabilize the rupiah.
To do this, he said, the public can help by not purchasing luxury items.
"No need for Ferrari, Lamborhgini, huge cars, luxury goods, expensive perfumes or Hermes bags, for example," the VP said on Tuesday, September 4.

That way, Kalla added, the difference between import and exports value will be reduced.
As of Thursday morning, the rupiah was traded for 14,928 per US dollar. This reflects a 48-bps gain from yesterday's close.
