TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gerindra Party central board member Habiburokhman responded to the possibility whether to include the #2019GantiPresiden movement into the Prabowo Subianto coalition or not. He maintained that there needs to be a distinction between a formal political institution and a social movement.
As it is widely known, the social movement #2019GantiPresiden urges for another figure to replace the current President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo during the 2019 presidential election.
Habiburokhman asserted that a social movement cannot be considered as a coalition, which is different from a formal political institution.
“The law dictates that a political party coalition can endorse a presidential and vice presidential candidate. The #2019GantiPresiden is a social movement that is mobilized by the public,” he told Tempo on Friday, August 31.
He then explained that the movement cannot be officially considered as a member of the coalition. However, he would be happy if the people that joined in the social movement supports Gerindra’s presidential and vice presidential candidate, “Since we are looking for constituents,” said Habiburokhman.
