Women cook in a temporary shelter after fleeing their damaged village affected by Sunday's earthquake in North Lombok, Indonesia, Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018. Along main roads in Lombok, desperate survivors - some of them children - held open cardboard boxes begging for donations from passing drivers. Others held signs that said simply: "We are earthquake victims. Please help us. We need food." AP Photo/Firdia Lisnawati

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police Chief Tito Karnavian asked the Lombok earthquake emergency response task force to actively rally volunteers into registering at official volunteer posts. He said this will strengthen the coordination among volunteers.

“Approach the volunteers that are present there. The team can keep track of which volunteers have been coordinated and the ones that have not,” said General Tito to the task force Commander Colonel Czi Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani in Lombok, Thursday, August 23.

Previously, several volunteers highlighted the disorganized official Lombok earthquake mitigation. A volunteer from the health unit Dr. Uva Utomo mentioned the lack of coordination between regional government and volunteers.

“We operated on our own,” said Uva as quoted in Koran Tempo’s August 23 edition.

However, Rizal denied that the government’s mitigation is lackluster and said that he had already established a volunteer post where each and every volunteer is registered and is tasked to help in the areas of responsibilities accordingly.

General Tito Karnavian also reminded volunteers to communicate their efforts with the government’s task force before reaching out to the victims of the Lombok earthquake by themselves.
