TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) estimated that the loss and damages caused by the earthquake in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, had reached IDR 7.7 trillion, according to BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 21, 2018.

Sutopo said that the losses and damages originated from five sectors, namely residences, infrastructure, productive economy, social, and other sectors.

"The highest losses and damages come from the housing sector, which contributes to almost 65 percent [of the total number]," Sutopo mentioned.

The impact of the Lombok earthquake was calculated starting from the 6.4 Richter Scale earthquake on Sunday, July 29, 2018, that killed 514 people, injured 7,145 others, and displaced 431,416 people. The quake also damaged 88,743 houses as well as 798 public and social facilities.

Sutopo went on to say that his agency is still calculating the costs for the recovery, reconstruction, and rehabilitation following Lombok earthquake.

"We are still calculating how many trillions needed for the recovery [from the Lombok earthquake]," Sutopo said.
