Jokowi: Asian Games Strengthens Unity of North and South Korea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo welcomed both Prime Minister of South Korea Lee Nak-Yon and North Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister Ri Ryong Nam at the Cofftea House in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex yesterday.
During the meeting, Jokowi said that the Indonesian government will consistently support peace and stability at the Korean Peninsula.
One of the support is through the 2018 Asian Games; “Asian Games is one of the crucial moments to strengthen the peace and friendship between South Korea and North Korea,” said the seventh Indonesian president in a written statement.
Both Koreas have sent 58 of their athletes that will merge in several sporting events such as women’s basketball, canoe, and paddling. President Jokowi said that Indonesia is hopeful that the recent positive developments can be followed up in the future.
At the end of the brief meeting, President Jokowi sent his regards for President moon Jae-in and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.
The 2018 Asian Games opening ceremony at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium saw a historical moment where South Korean and North Korean teams parading as a united group while flying the Korean Unification Flag, which marks the second time after it was first exhibited at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on February 9, 2018.
