TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is celebrating its 73rd Independence Day today, August 17. The ceremony of national Merah-Putih (Red-White) flag hoisting is usually held to commemorate this day.

The national Red-White flag raising to celebrate the Indonesian Independence Day is often carried out in extreme locations. The flag hoisting can be held under the sea up to the summit of a mountain.

The following are a number of unusual locations to raise the national flag:

1. Mount Batu, West Bandung

The flag raisers consisting of 13 young rock climbers in Gunung Batu, West Bandung Regency, West Java, held a flag-hoisting ceremony on the cliff to commemorate the 73rd Indonesian Anniversary on last August 14. They stretched an 8x12 meter flag from above of more than 1,000 meters altitude.

2. Kapuas Bridge, West Kalimantan

The youths who are the member of the Scouts, Tagana, Saka Bhayangkara, the Kapuas Hulu Regional Children Forum, as well as officials in Putussibau, Kapuas, West Kalimantan, will hold an unusual flag raising on August 17. They will hoist a 40x9 meter flag on the Kapuas River bridge.

3. Mount Prau, Dieng

In Dieng, the commemoration of Indonesian Independence Day will be held at the summit of Mount Prau and will be attended by around 1,000 climbers. They will also fly 1,000 kites.

The 2x17 meter flag will be hoisted at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters above sea level. The climbers must take trekking route for 3-4 hours to reach the location.

4. Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi

The divers who are members of the Wakatobi Professional Diver Association (WPDA) will stretch the Merah-Putih flag under the waters of Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi, at a depth of 8 meters. It will be done in the waters of Cemara Beach, Wapia-Pia Village, Wangi-Wangi District.
