WALHI Expects Caldera Toba Lake Enlisted in UNESCO Geopark

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian environmental group Walhi North Sumatra expected Geopark Caldera Toba to be listed in UNESCO Global Geopark as to promote the country`s environment-based tourism to the world.
“The government is demanded to campaign Geopark Caldera Toba (GKT) for the sake of its development,” said Walhi North Sumatra executive director Dana Prima Tarigan in Medan, Wednesday, August 15.
Dana said Lake Toba is the tourism destinations of foreign tourist hence it should be acknowledged in UNESCO. “Of course, there are requirements to be fulfilled,” she added.
However, Walhi is committed to assisting the government to pursue the recognization and that it would give suggestions to ease the process.
“Walhi has an obligatory and partakes in monitoring the environmental issue in Lake Toba area,” she said, asserting that the group would continuously support so long the GKT activities aimed at preserving the environment and the areas.
Dana mentioned the requirements set by UNESCO to put Caldera Toba in its Global Geopark list were related to the area identification, geology, geo heritage, geo conservation, and environmental issue.
