Sandiaga Uno had served as deputy governor for nine months alongside Governor Anies Baswedan. Sandi will run in the presidential campaign as the vice president candidate for Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto.

The candidates' pair is supported by Gerindra, PAN and PKS. Prabowo and Sandiaga announced their candidacy last night on August 9 in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, not long after incumbent President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo announced that he will run for presidency with Maruf Amin as his running mate in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
