TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Manggarai Police have questioned 11 people related to the Gili Lawa savanna fire on Wednesday night, August 1, 2018. The savanna is located within the Komodo National Park in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.

"We have questioned 11 witnesses in relaton to the fire that engulfed the Gili Lawa Island several days ago," said West Manggarai Police Chief Adj. Comm. Julisa Kusumowardono in a written statement received by Tempo on Saturday, August 4, 2018.

Julisa added that the eight witnesses that were questioned comprised of tourist sand the people visiting the area such as tour guides, boat crew, and tourists in general. The three other witnesses were officers of the Komodo National Park.

The fire at Gili Lawa happened on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at 18:15 Indonesia Central Time (WITA), and engulfed 10 hectares of the savanna.

"We are still investigation our suspicions that there was an individual involved in causing the fire," said the police chief.
