TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya called for a thorough investigation upon the fire that engulfed the savanna at one of Indonesia's internationally renowned tourist spot in East Nusa Tenggara, Gili Lawa in the Komodo National Park.
"I have requested the ecosystem and natural resources conservation directorate general to handle the case immediately," said Minister Siti in a written statement received by Tempo on Friday, August 3, 2018.
Despite the initial investigation staged by the National Komodo Park and local police through questioning several eyewitnesses, Minister Siti asked that the perpetrator must go through legal proceedings if the incident was proven to be intentional "to prevent similar things from happening again."
The Gili Lawa area in Komodo Island is one of tourists' top list to visit with its 10 hectare savanna field. Initial investigation found that the fire on Wednesday, August 1, was caused by someone recklessly disposing of a cigarette butt.
