TEMPO.CO, Washington - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA, has uploaded an animated video of asteroids on July 23 to its YouTube channel.
The one-minute animated video shows all the asteroids that have been discovered from January 1, 1999, to January 31, 2018.
NASA said that there were at least more than 18,000 objects near the Earth. The objects include asteroids and comets that have entered the solar system within 121 million miles of the Sun and about 30 million miles from Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
NASA also explained that there was an average of 40 new discoveries per week. The research team searched and tracked these objects to find any impact on the Earth and other planets.
The animated video depicts the mapping of the position of NEO (Near-Earth Objects) known in the past 20 years. The search team of asteroid supported by NEO NASA Observation Program has found more than 95 percent of near-Earth asteroids known to date.
In the video, the blue dots represent asteroids near Earth, while the orange ones represent asteroids that lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
“For about 20 years, CNEOS (Center for Near-Earth Object Studies) has been a center of NASA's activity to accurately map the orbits of all-known NEO, to predict the approach of future objects, assess their likely impact on our planet, and provide the information to astronomers all over the world and the general public,” NASA reported in a release quoted by MLive.
