TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Sumatran tiger community known as "Tiger Heart Bengkulu" collectively swept several forest areas to confiscate numerous tiger traps set by poachers in a program called sapu jerat to commemorate the 2018 global tiger day.
“We focused the sapu jerat program on three areas prone to tiger-hunting,” said Nur Rahma Deni, Tiger Heart Bengkulu’s global tiger day coordinator on Monday, July 30. This is the second time the program takes place.
According to Deni, the three locations that the group focused on are areas within the production forest and limited production forests, where numerous cases of tiger-poaching occured.

The sapu jerat team, said Deni, comprised volunteers from non-government organizations (NGO) and university students who are passionate about the well-being of tigers.
In the 2017 global tiger day, the sapu jerat team successfully rid the forests of scores of tiger traps spread across the districts of Seluma, Kaur, North Bengkulu and Mukomuko.
Deni said illegal hunting still posed a threat to the preservation of endangered species in the region. The commemoration of the 2018 global tiger day was also supported by Forum Harimau Kita (FHK) and the Bengkulu-Lampung Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA).
