Indonesian Math Team Wins Gold, Silver Medals in the 59th IMO

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian senior high students grabbed gold medal and five silver medals in the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) that was held at Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Thankful towards the team’s achievement, Education and Culture Ministry’s directorate of senior high coaching Suharlan thanked the team that have fought for their country in an international mathematics event he deemed as, “One of the most prestigious events.”

Petra 1 Surabaya’s Gian Cordana Sanjaya won the gold medal with a total score of 31. Meanwhile, Alfian Edgar Tjandra (Kharisma Bangsa High), Kinantan Arya Bagaspati (Taruna Nusantara High school), Farras Mohammad Hibban Faddila (SMAK Kharisma Bangsa), Valentino Dante (SMAK 2 Petra Surabaya), and Otto Alexander Sutianto (SMAK Penabur Gading Serpong) all took silver.

This latest achievement by the country’s future generation ranks Indonesia tenth from 106 countries that participated in the IMO and is the second gold medal from Indonesia’s 30-year participation. Throughout the years, Indonesia also collected 22 silver medals, 44 bronze, and 30 honorable mentions.

Indonesia’s first gold medal was in 2013 at the 54th IMO held in Colombia, which ranked Indonesia 19th overall globally.

According to Indonesian IMO team coordinator Dr. Aleams Barra, participants were asked to complete a task that consists of six original and unintroduced questions that must be completed within a 4.5 hour time-frame.
