TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti said a short circuit was one of the causes of the fire that engulfed 36 ships in Port of Benoa on July 9.
“The first indication is that the fire was allegedly caused by short circuit,” said Susi during a press conference at her office in Jakarta, Tuesday, July 12.
On July 9, 36 ships burned in Benoa Harbor, Bali. It took more than 12 hours to mitigate the fire since the ships were made of wood. In addition, the ships had been filled with fuel so it ignited the fire. Not to mention the strong winds that helped spread the fire.
The fire broke at 2 am local time in front of Arabika Khatulistiwa Fishing Industry or AKFI office. Susi said the fire was first blazed in a ship owned by AKFI Cilacap Jaya Karya. “This ship burned down the row of other AKFI ships,” she said.
The minister explained that the fire burned 36 fishing vessels; five ships of AKFI, seven ships of Intimas Surya and 24 ships of Bandar Nelayan 24.
Susi Pudjiastuti also clarified that the 36 burned vessels in Benoa are not fishermen's boats, but fishing vessels. “So we need to clarify that these boats are owned by fishing companies, not fishermen's boat,” she said.
