TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - DreadOut, a horror game developed by Digital Happiness studio in Bandung, is getting its own movie. For the first time in Indonesia, a movie based on a local game will be brought to the big screen.
“When I try playing this game for the first time, I know that this game has the potential to be turned into a movie,” said Kimo Stamboel, a director-cum-writer, and producer of DreadOut film.
The project was announced on Saturday, July 14, in the sidelines event of Game Prime which was held by the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) at Balai Kartini, Jakarta.
The collaboration is expected as an example for creative industry people in the country to be more creative in partnership with sub-sectors. "So the gross domestic product of creative economy in Indonesia will grow faster," he said.
Digital Happiness studio as the owner of the DreadOut game entrusted local production house Goodhouse.id to create the DreadOut film which will be produced by Kimo Stamboel, Wida Handoyo, and Edwin Nazir.
The cooperation was also established with Major Big Studios for worldwide marketing considering the fans of the DreadOut game has spread all over the world, including the famous youtuber PewDiePie.
DreadOut is a survival horror game which had years of development. The game was finally published in 2014 after the fans participated in supporting the funds.
DreadOut was named as the first successful local game on the international crowd platform. The founder of Digital Happiness game studio, Rachmad Imron, said the producer had a common vision with him to make his game into the movie.
DreadOut, according to him, deliberately pioneered as a business based on intellectual property to be developed into entertainment franchise in various formats such as movies. Besides, he also adored director Kimo Stamboel from Mo Brothers. "My partner and I, Dito, have long fanned with Kimo's movies," Imron said. Some films made by Kimo were Rumah Dara, Headshot, and Killers.
