4 Tips for Millennials to Prevent Presenteeism

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Among the depressed millennials, 70 percent of them also experience presenteeism, encouraged to keep working despite being sick. High job demands are undeniable to be common depression triggers.

To avoid it, David Michigan, a motivator and trainer for mental health problems from Paris, France, delivered the following 4 tips.

1. Meditation

People who meditate, even in short periods, better sleep quality also decreased the production of cortisol, a hormone released by the body in anxious and stressful conditions. Meditation, in turn, produces hormonal changes in the brain associated with decreased anxiety, better concentration, and general psychic health.

"Many (corporate leaders) encourage their workers to have a healthy diet, exercise, take periodic medical examinations, and proactively address health problems. But to maintain millennials’ workability and getting the best performance of this generation, the most sensible thing to do is to encourage them to maintain their health of mind," said Michigan.

2. Plan for relaxing activities

Michigan suggests that you have to schedule daily "calm" activities. As simple as walking around the office during the day after an exhausting meeting to ease the tension of the brain, stopping by the coffee shop after work, or just sitting in the car, not thinking about anything on the way home.

"This strategy will make millennials feel more (their minds) more controlled. Even better, they can make sure it has gone through maximum productivity levels in a day," said Michigan.

3. Find the support system

Mental health disorders are still often misunderstood and considered a disgrace. This is why most people choose to hide it. As a result, those with mental disorder have no support system or social connections required. Whereas according to the American Psychological Association, social support is very important to help people deal with stress and other mental health issues.

"This is why it is important for a person to have a circle of friends who are mutually supportive, understanding, and ready to help. You can join a community with the same background if there is no friend in your neighborhood who really understands your situation,” said Michigan.

4. Find flexible jobs

The demand that must be present in the office every day is also potentially triggered stress. Tired on the journey, not to mention unbridled traffic jams make most millennial workers expect freedom of time and work. This is why Michigan recommends you to look for jobs that have a flexible attendance policy.

"Instead of focusing on the need for workers to be physically present, the focus should lead to workers' well-being," Michigan said. The freedom and comfort of working make millennial workers healthier and more productive.
