Minister Susi Reaffirms Indonesia`s Commitment on Coral Reefs

TEMPO.CO, Paris - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti conveyed Indonesia`s commitment to take the role as the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) joint chiefs together with Monaco and Australia in attempts to protect and manage coral reefs.
“Indonesia’s involvement in the ICRI is driven by our interest and involvement on sustainable coral reef conservation and management. It is also to confirm the benefits of the ecosystem for fisheries, food security, and human welfare,” said Minister Susi Pudjiastuti in Paris, France on Wednesday, July 4.
Minister Susi further assessed the fact that as a nation where a third of it comprises of the ocean, the Indonesian Government is highly committed to issues related to maritime affairs.

She explained that Indonesia has been conducting its efforts since the World Ocean Conference (WOC) and the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF) held in 2009. Susi further assessed that Indonesia’s commitment has not changed since its inception at the WOC and CTI-CFF.
The Minister also explained Indonesia’s position as the main supporter of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) Resolution on the sustainable management of coral reefs adopted on the UNEA-2 held in May 2016. This resolution is aimed at guiding the policies regarding coral reef management within the context of the 2030 development.
By partnering with UNEP, Susi said that Indonesia took the role to host the UNEA resolution on June 28-29, 2016, in Manado, North Sulawesi. The resolution focused on identifying the chances to conduct a follow up that can be prioritized in regards to the implementation of the resolution.
Furthermore, Minister Susi Pudjiastuti also explained to the audience of Indonesia’s commitment at Our Ocean Conference (OOC) 2016 in Washington DC. Indonesia is also set to be the host nation of the fifth OOC that is scheduled to be held in Bali on October 29-31, this year.
