TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated Monday the wind farm in Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap) Regency, South Sulawesi. The wind power plant boasts 30 sets of wind turbines, making it the largest in the country.

The 80-meter-high wind turbines are equipped with 57-meter-long blades that power a 2.5 megawatt turbine. The total capacity the turbines can produce is 75 megawatts.

President Jokowi jokingly said the wind turbines made him feel as if he was in the windmill country of the Netherlands.

“I felt as if I was in the Netherlands. It’s feels like in Europe, but we are in Sidrap,” said the seventh Indonesian president on Monday, July 2. Jokowi also introduced two new coal-fired power plants (PLTU).

Jokowi explained the PLTB was proof of the government’s commitment to developing generators powered by renewable energy. Jokowi added the government also planned on building similar projects in other regions.

By introducing the new windmills, President Jokowi hopes that the target of fulfilling 23 percent of renewable energy can be completed by the end of 2025. He said Indonesia had huge potential to develop renewable energy, incluiding geothermal energy, solar energy and water energy.

“We have the potential of 29,000 megawatts from geothermal energy, of which we have only tapped 2,000 megawatts,” he said.
