7 Safety Tips for Female Solo Travelers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia was recently dismayed by the shocking and unfortunate news of a 22 year old female tourist from France who was reportedly sexually harassed in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday, June 19.

According to the woman, the harassment was done by a freelance guide after visiting the tourist destination’s waterfall in West Manggarai, Cunca Wulang.

Regrettably, news of sexual harassments and assaults happening to women who travel by themselves often happen in other countries as well, such as India. The Indian government barred female tourists to roam the streets alone at night following numerous cases of sexual assaults done to female travelers.

However, just because it is risky does not mean that women are not allowed to travel overseas alone. Tempo compiled a few tips from solo travelers such as Ciar Johnson, and Dutch traveler Suzanne van de Beek who Tempo had the opportunity to interview.

1. Meet other solo travelers

Going on a solo trip does not necessarily mean that you should enjoy your time at the destination all by yourself. Beek admitted that she would attempt to meet new likeminded friends through her travel to numerous places internationally. She said that that new companion can be local or international travelers.

2. Bump up your awareness towards your surroundings

Corroborating with Ciara Johnson’s tip that she shared through her Tweet, female travelers should be constantly aware of her surroundings such as passing vehicles or whether a certain vehicle is showing signs of approaching her or not. She reminded that people should be more sensitive for their environment even if the clue is a mere sound of someone’s footsteps.

3. Pick what you wear accordingly

Beek once told a story where she would adjust her clothes she wore to the places she visited. She also avoids wearing overly revealing clothes when traveling on her own.

4. Careful with your social media location posts

Ciara Johnson suggested travelers avoid posting information regarding real time location to prevent unwanted events from people who might have criminal intents against us. She stated that she would usually post her experience in a certain location after she had left the place.

5. Study the place you intend to visit and its culture

It is always important to conduct researches before starting your travel journey. Ciara had stated that she would never skip time to research the culture, norm, clothing habits, crime rates, natural disasters, political climate, and many more before starting a journey.

6. Don’t travel with all of your precious belongings

The most important aspect in traveling solo is to have cash at the ready and the necessary communication devices. Ciara advised female solo travelers to avoid wearing any jewelry. She also reminded to carry your bag or backpack in a front facing position, especially in crowded areas to avoid falling victim of pickpockets.

7. Keep your money in several locations

Separating your money to several locations is important to be done. One of the purposes is to have a backup money if you accidentally lose your wallet or briefcase.
