Indonesia Delivers Inputs in UN High-Level Summit for World Peace

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi and Finland Foreign Affairs Minister Timo Soini became the co-host of the United Nation`s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation (HLAB-M) in Helsinki, June 18. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and members of HLAB-M attended the summit.

On her welcome speech, Minister Retno delivered three suggestions for the secretary-general and HLAB-M regarding mediation, conflict the preventive measures and building peace. First, the important in enhancing the communication with community leaders and religious figures to maintain the value of tolerance.

Regarding this matter, Minister Retno mentioned that Indonesia recently became the host of the high-level trilateral meeting of ulema (Islamic Scholars) from Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Pakistan in Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, on May 11. The meeting resulted in positive commitments that were expected to bring peace in Afghanistan.

Second suggestion, the vital issue in changing the culture of reaction to the culture of prevention. Minister Retno expressed supports to UN secretary-general for making conflict prevention as a priority of the intergovernmental organization.

Third, the necessary to spread habit of dialogue, respect international law, and partnership between regional organizations in a bit to prevent conflict.

The three inputs were in line with Indonesian priority as the non-permanent UN Security Council member which for the period of 2019-2020.

Responding to the speech of UN secretary-general on the role of women in peace, Retno Marsudi stated it was fundamental to empower women in eradicating terrorism considering that women played an important role in creating peace.

The United Nation’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation (HLAB-M) was formed by UN secretary-general on September 13, 2017, which consisted of 18 current and former global leaders, senior officials and renowned experts. One of the members is the former Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa. HLAB-M was created to support the UN secretary-general in enhancing mediation on UN agenda.

The issue of mediation and conflict prevention were not new problems in Indonesia's foreign politics. The UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres specifically delivered his appreciation for the active role of Indonesia on Rakhine State issue.
