TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The East Jakarta Police Chief Grand Comm. Yoyon Tony Surya warned that the authorities will not hesitate to lethally fire their weapon on people that intentionally throw rocks at passing vehicles from pedestrian bridges above the toll road

“That is an extremely vile activity and endangers many road users,” said Tony during a press conference at the East Jakarta Police headquarters on Wednesday, June 13. Tony displayed several pieces of evidence such as pebbles and shards of roof tile used to throw at cars.

Cipayung Police Sector arrested two suspects on Tuesday 04:00 while the pair was about to throw rocks for the second time on top of the pedestrian bridge above the Malaka toll-road in East Jakarta.

Police revealed that the suspects were still minors and had been throwing rocks at passing cars as a means to kill time. Because of the suspects’ vile acts, a vehicle sustained a cracked front windshield and nearly injured the driver who was driving.

“They were curious what it would be like to throw rocks at cars from top of a pedestrian bridge,” said Yoyon. Furthermore, police said they will maximize the use of CCTV installed at pedestrian bridges on every toll roads.

The Malaka toll-road incident was not the only occurrence, a car owned by Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) Brig. Gen. Syafiul sustained front windshield damaged after a rock struck the car he was driving at the Jagorawi toll-road on Monday, June 11. The incident took place underneath a pedestrian bridge at the Cibubur toll-road exit.

Tragically, this illegal activity killed Saeful Mazazi (43) from Tegal, Central Java. Saeful died after the car he was driving at the Cikampek toll-road was struck with a rock which managed to penetrate the windshield and unfortunately fatally wounded his head.
