TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Ministry has long predicted that the peak Eid homecoming traffic congestion will take place three times. The Ministry’s Director General of Land Transportation Budi Setiyadi said that it will likely happen on June 8-9, June 13-14, and June 15 during the Eid al-Fitr.
“At first I did not believe the stats, however, the data was based on researches and polls,” said Budi Setiyadi at the Eid homecoming national post on Sunday, June 10.
Budi explained that a new pattern has started to emerge regarding people’s decision to depart for the Eid homecoming, especially the peak congestion that is predicted to happen during Eid day.
This revelation was thanks to the poll conducted roughly two weeks ago by the transportation ministry’s research and development agency with the help of social media as its platform. The poll was participated by 5,000 respondents.
“Based on that research, we found that the congestion caused by mass-movements of vehicles can happen three occurrences. First on June 8,9,10; June 13-14; and June 15 on Eid day,” said Budi.
Budi was initially skeptical towards the validity of the data and asked for its accuracy to be checked again considering that he believes social media users mostly consist of non-adults, however in the end Budi trusted the poll results.
This phenomenon of three peak Eid homecoming traffic congestion is a direct result of the government’s regulation of extending the official mandatory mass-leave for office workers and schools under Presidential Decree No13/2018.
