TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla supports the Elections Committee`s (PKPU) regulation banning ex-corruption convicts to run as legislators. Kalla believes that the prohibition will allow the Indonesian politics to get the best candidates.
"I support it. That way the DPR can actually have good dignity," the vice president said Wednesday, May 30.
Kalla added that he hopes the provision will reduce the number of corruption cases implicating House members.
KPU's decision to prohibit former corruptors from running as politicians sparks controversies. The House of Representatives rejected the idea at first, as well as the government, Bawaslu, and a number of political parties.
The opposers had argued that the rule may deprive an individual's rights to get elected, to which Kalla disagrees with.
